Exciting useful home and garden ideas to bring that spring into your step

Now that spring is here, it is time to enjoy pottering in the garden and looking for signs of life after that long bleak winter. Take advantage of dry sunny days to rake snow mold off the lawns and prepare for a glorious summer through spring. While every season has its own charm, it is an established fact that warm weather invigorates and goads people into action after a sedentary winter period.

Where do I start?

The best way is to start small. Choose the area you want to designate for beautifying and prepare it for a wonderful yield. Choose a sunny corner to house a compositor and start building a compost pile, which is going to be a great boon in summer. Learn all about weed control, weeds, insect repellants and disease control along side with watering requirements of plants. A useful home and garden idea would be to select blooms pertaining to the period and invest in them. Make sure you clearly demarcate the vegetable garden from the flowering shrubs. Plant the flowering shrubs on both sides of driveways or pathways to create a happy alluring look. A thin layer of compost mixed with native soil sets off a healthy plant growth.

Go organic with mulch

If you work on wet solids, chances are you will wind up with big clumps of hard packed dried soil. It is not advisable to walk on wet soil as compaction makes it difficult for roots to grow.

A good useful home and garden suggestion is to use a board when walking on soil adjacent to work areas to enable distribution of weight. A broad fork is a good tool to use to aerate soil without disturbing its complex structures. Use useful home and garden tips to make organic mulch to deter growth of weeds. Stabilize and maintain soil temperatures and watch how you water the soil. Too much watering is detrimental to plant life and causes severe fungal diseases. A useful home and garden suggestion is to water plants in the daytime so that they dry during the day.

An organized regime for plant maintenance

A daily check on pests and unnecessary growth is necessary if you plan to create a better home garden. Pull out weeds and use protectors to ensure there are no unnecessary plants and twigs cluttering up the space. Use insect repellant sprays and medicines to make sure that the plants remain healthy and devoid of slugs and aphids. Push burlap into place and remove dried grass and twigs with embedded roots. Prepare your garden for a glorious spring followed by a fruitful summer.

Home and Garden Tips – Making Your Home a Better Place to Live

Improving your garden and your home. With the economic downturn, many of us are spending much more time at home. While we are there, we start to notice that things are not as nice as we want them to be.
Since we have some spare time on our hands, we should make use of it and improve our homes and our gardens. One of the easiest way we can improve our home is to paint the walls. Painting is not as hard as you might think. You will need to get enough paint to give all the walls at least two coats. Otherwise, the color of the old paint might bleed through. It is best to use a roller rather than a paint brush, as a roller leaves a smoother finish on the wall. You should also use a lot of masking tape to protect the baseboard, the ceiling, electrical outlets, and any built-in items such as cupboards or windows. Also buy a drop cloth to protect the floor.
For the garden, you should get rid of all those weeds. Dandelions are particularly difficult, as their roots go very deep. If you don’t have a specific tool for removing dandelions, you can use a long screwdriver. Push the screwdriver as deep as you can into the soil alongside the root, then jiggle it back and forth until the soil is loose enough for you to be able to remove the dandelion without breaking the root.
If you are particularly adventurous, you can cook and eat both the roots and the leaves. Make sure that you wash both the roots and the leaves thoroughly before eating them. Do not try to eat them if you have been spraying insect killer on your lawn, as you might become ill. These are just some tips to improve your home and your garden.

HOME AND GARDENING

Anybody can do organic vegetable gardening at home because the principle behind this is not that different from what they do in the farm. The only difference is that you work in a smaller area and you get to choose what you like plant.

The first thing you have to do is find an ideal location. A lot of people do organic vegetable gardening in their backyard. To make it work, whatever you are planting should get at least 6 hours of sunlight everyday and access to water.

Just like the ancient civilizations that relied on an efficient irrigation system, you too should do the same by making sure there is adequate drainage because if you don’t, you will have to do organic vegetable gardening using a raise bed.

When your ideal location has been found, it is time to cultivate the land. For that, you will need your gardening tools and a pair of gloves to pluck out the weeds on the ground. This might take a few days to make sure the area is ready for planting.

You will only know if the ground you are going to plant your vegetable is a good spot by testing it with some compost and mixing this with the soil. Should it be able to integrate and stabilize itself with the soil, this means that you can start planting your crops and see it grow in the succeeding weeks.

If you don’t like to buy compost from the gardening store, you can make your own using coffee grounds, dead leaves, grass clippings, food waste or even manure. They also serve as excellent fertilizers.

As for your vegetables, take note that some of these may not be suitable in the land you are planting these on. This is because of several factors that are beyond your control such as the weather, pests and other plant borne diseases. You can avoid making this mistake by doing some research on what vegetables are ideal to plant in your area and asking fellow organic gardeners.

One way to protect the organic vegetables you are planting is by planting a variety of them at a time since some of these protect each other from pests. Such practice is better known as crop rotation especially when you want to adapt with the weather in your area. Another defense system that works is getting the help of Mother Nature as birds, certain insects and even toads have proven to be useful.

If you live in an area where wild animals may eat your vegetables, you should put up fences so they are not able to get through. Other tools you can use are animal hair, baby powder and deodorant soaps.

Part of preparing the land is removing the weeds. But remember that new weeds grow after some time so you have to inspect the area from time to time.

Planting your own organic vegetable garden at home will surely save you money as these are quite expensive in the supermarket. If you have some excess stocks when it is time to harvest them, maybe you can give some to your neighbors or make some money by selling it at the local market which isn’t that bad given that you don’t shell out that much cash for this investment.

Getting Gardening Decor and Design Ideas To Work

Are you looking to make your garden look more like something unique? then you need to come up with your own garden decor and design. This is not as hard as you may think. Here are a few tips to help you come up with some ideas that you can transform into a design that is just right for you.

First, you need to find some sort of inspiration. Your inspiration may come from a color pallet you see, such as the colors of your current garden. They may come from a picture in a mag or even from a painting in your home. Your inspiration may come from a piece you want to use in your garden. What ever that may be, inspiration puts you on the path to coming up with your own unique garden decor and design.

With inspiration on your side, you need to begin gathering specific ideas for your garden decor and design. Start looking through books that have pictures and schematics for various garden decor and design projects. Often, you can find elements of assorted existing designs that you can ruffle together to create a garden decor and design that is completely your own style.

Next, you want to look into the costs that will be incurred as you bring your garden decor and project to life. As you go along, you may find it necessary to accommodate some details of your plans, owing to finances. Don’t let be troubled by this. It is not unusual for even the best of plans to require some minor tweaking during the process of creation. But try to stay as true to your vision as you possibly can. That way, the finished garden decor and design will be something that you will be very proud of for many years to come.

Gardening Basics

If you think gardening [http://gardener-jim.blogspot.com/] is to hard, then you must read these blogs on gardening.

With the economy the way it is we must find a way to stretch our dollars and a big way is by the gardening of fruits and vegatables.

In the upcoming blogs we will take you from being a beginner at gardening, having never done so before to being a gardening expert. We will talk about how to begin your seeds for gardening to what trees to decide on for your fruits. We will talk about field gardening, raised bed gardening, posthole gardening, barrel gardening, etc.

As for my expertise, I have been teaching gardening classes for about 15 years at gardening clubs, churches, and gardening retail outlets. I have been paid up to $150 per class. Plus, I have been gardening myself and keeping up with all the new and easier methods. But, Now I am going to give you the benifit of my gardening experience FREE!

Enough about me, Lets get started on our gardening blogs.

First we must decide on your gardening technique and what type of vegatables you want to and are able to grow in you gardening space. Then we must decide whether you want to start your plants from seed of buy the plants from a gardening retailer.

If you buy your seeds you must make sure you have enough room to plant them all. For example, there are about 1,000 seeds in a packet of lettuce (thats a lot of heads to use by yourself unless you are gardening for the whole neighborhood) and it is that way with many other seed packets.

In our next lesson we will talk about how to and what equipment one needs to start their seeds from the beginning as we start our gardening advice.

Penetrative, Powerful Speech Which Changes People’s Lives

Being a good speaker is not enough. Being a truly good speaker is to have a type of speech that has the power of truth and altruism. This arises from lifetimes of practices so that when this person speaks, he will profoundly move another person, sometimes to tears.

That type of speech does not come from practice, from a book or from learning. That type of speech comes from lifetime after lifetime after lifetime of telling the truth and using speech to benefit others and for positive reasons. This speech is developed when we consciously don’t use our speech to get money, sex, rock and roll, drugs, fun and increase our attachments.

Instead, this speech is used to increase people’s happiness, develop others’ mind, increase peace, love and altruism; it is used to destroy delusions and to destroy the very causes that make themselves and other people unhappy.

It is through speech that we can create wars. It is through speech, we can create peace. People who have excellent motivation, but speak badly or wrongly, can create wars. On the other hand, people who have very evil motivations can also still make things move if they are very good in their speech.

Think of a person with good motivation and good intentions, who speaks to benefit others. He uses his speech, tongue, teeth, mouth and vocal chords all for changing people’s lives from self-ingratiating activities that bring harm and unhappiness to themselves and the ones they love to creating benefit for themselves and others.

Imagine a person who uses their speech like this, lifetime after lifetime, after lifetime, after lifetime, after lifetime. This type of person will eventually have Buddha speech.

The scriptures explain what it means when someone has Buddha speech: although they may only be speaking about one subject; even if they only utter one word, it will penetrate your mind and touch you, whatever your level of intelligence. Even if people understand the words differently, it will affect them deeply and changes their lives. That is the power of speech of an enlightened Being or a Buddha.

When they speak, it isn’t just nice words to pick up a pretty girl; it isn’t sweet words to secure a good deal on a house or a product, or for bargaining at the market. It is a type of speech that benefits and changes people’s lives because it arises from altruism.

Is Self-Gratification Bad?

Self-gratification is not bad; it depends on the amount we pursue and the results of pursuing it. Some of our self-gratification can result in benefit. For example, someone might be extremely interested in art; he loves to paint and has spent the last ten years locked up in his room, eating one piece of bread a day and painting, at the expense of his health and friends. He doesn’t have anything else. Then, suddenly, he might connect with an organisation that asks him to paint for them. His paintings might become a huge success and raise a lot of money for a good cause such as research for curing cancer. That is wonderful.

But if we are stuck on a self-gratifying activity and we do it just for ourselves, it takes time away from everything and anything that is important.

It is not just Dharma and I am not just talking about going to the Dharma centre. People in every country around the world have their own little hang-ups about what is important; and individually, everyone has his idea or perception of what should be done.

In Tibetan culture, it is to work part-time for the Dharma, to sincerely donate your time and energy to the Dharma, so that your Gurus, the temple and the Dharma can spread with less hindrance and less problems. You don’t burden them but you help in taking away the burden. In Chinese society, it might be filial devotion, to take care of your parents. (But you don’t go all the way – you don’t sit there for the rest of your life and not do anything else because you’re taking care of your parents. You do it with logic.)

Everyone has his own culture and no one can say one is good or bad because the bottom line is whether we are focusing on what is important or focusing on ourselves. That is the bottom line. That is why there is no argument about what is important in different cultures and in our minds for bringing out our Divinity. All these methods are just vehicles for bringing out our Divinity. It is not the actual action.

In ancient societies and old cultures like the Tibetan, Indian, Japanese or Chinese cultures, our promise and word of honour – or samaya – is extremely important. It makes us human or not. It makes us honorable or not. Whatever and whomever we are committed to – whether our Guru is big or small – we remember what we have promised and we do it. That is very precious. If you were to break your promise in ancient Japanese culture, you cut your finger off. It is as simple as that. They don’t make you do it, but you have to give something back. There is retribution and it shows who you are.

It is very bad when we lose this honour or this statement of who we are because we are suppressing our Divinity. It is us saying, “It doesn’t matter how you feel, it is important how I feel. I don’t care about you.” That is the unspoken message we are giving when we don’t do what we are supposed to do, whatever society we are in. People who live like this go further and further down. As the years advance, their reputation, their happiness, what they want and what they pursue will go down, down, down because they are only going after things that suppress the Divine – Buddha nature, God, Paradise, Heaven, or whatever we want to label it.

Do We Need a Guru to Be Enlightened?

Guru comes from the combination of two Sanskrit words: Guna, meaning “good qualities,” and Ruchi, meaning “a collection”. So, Guna and Ruci is “a collection of good qualities”. Temporarily, for now, we need a Guru on the outside but the outer Guru leads us to the inner Guru. Without the outer Guru there is no guideline for our practice; it is impossible.

In worldly life, we need teachers, we need help. Everything we have in life has been acquired from a teacher or someone who has taught us – a parent, at school, a relative, etc. Whenever we want to achieve anything in ordinary, worldly situations, we must have someone to guide us and lead the way. We respect that person, and we speak nicely and politely to them. If we fight back, show no respect, do not listen and do the opposite of what the teacher tells us to do, then we will not be able to learn or perceive as quickly.

This is just for our ordinary lives, which is only for about 60 to 80 years. For our spiritual lives, when we want Enlightenment – where the roads and direction are much more complicated, difficult, longer and even dangerous at times – how can we achieve this without a teacher? There is no way we can achieve this without a teacher.

Not everything can be learnt from books. I was just reading a commentary about spiritual teachers which said very clearly that if we only read books to study, we can only reach a very low point. Many questions cannot be answered. We need a teacher with experience to explain these things to us.

If books were enough, then the Buddha would have emanated as books and he would never have spoken a single word of teaching. If teachers were not necessary, Buddha would have never manifested as a universal teacher.

No one has ever become enlightened without a teacher. It is impossible without a teacher – not in this world, in this age, at this juncture. There may be other world systems where Buddhas have manifested, turned the Wheel of Dharma and given other sets of teachings where those beings could run on their own for a while. According to what I have studied, it is not like that in this place.
